About Us

The Paper and Packaging PRO Alliance unites leading Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs) within the paper and packaging waste streams, in a shared mission to transform South Africa’s recycling landscape. As a member-led organisation, the PRO Alliance does not control but rather supports its members.

Together, we are building sustainable infrastructure nationwide, driving innovative collection and recycling projects (for example, Separation @ Source), creating economies of scale to achieve broader, impactful project implementation, and championing nationwide awareness campaigns that deliver real environmental impact.

As established industry leaders with shared expertise in extended producer responsibility (EPR) and waste management, we collaborate to shape meaningful legislative reform, integrate waste picker communities, strengthen municipal partnerships, and engage stakeholders across the value chain – driving South Africa towards a thriving circular economy.

Our Objective

The PRO Alliance aims to demonstrate real change in South Africa’s waste landscape through the delivery of our members’ successful paper and packaging EPR schemes.

What success looks like

Recovery and recycling targets are met.

The targeted number of waste pickers are registered on a functional South African Waste Pickers Registration System (SAWPRS) and receive the mandated service fee.

The South African public is well-informed and actively participates in waste recovery and recycling programmes.

Vision

A thriving circular economy where paper and packaging waste is minimised, resource use is optimised, and all stakeholders across the value chain collaborate to build a sustainable, inclusive, and transparent waste management system.

Mission

To drive the successful implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for paper and packaging waste by fostering collaboration among Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs) and key stakeholders, ensuring transparent, efficient, and inclusive waste management that delivers measurable environmental, economic and social benefits.
